Lady Lobos grind out comeback victories

The UNM volleyball team pulled off back-to-back come-from-behind victories on Saturday at Johnson Gym to capture the championship of the MCM Elegante Lobo Classic. After topping Delaware 25-20, 25-13, 25-21 Friday night in their season opener, the Lobos rallied from a 2-1 set deficit to edge Portland State on Saturday afternoon.

Freshman seems favorite to start

The UNM football team’s running backs are playing a game of musical chairs — all four are dashing for the starting seat. Surprisingly, freshman Demond Dennis created a buzz during fall training camp and might be the clear-cut favorite to take the field Sept. 5 in the Lobos’ season-opener against Texas A&M.

Brett Favre is back in the NFL with Minnesota, but the Vikings picked the wrong QB if they were looking to go to the Promised Land. Opinion editor Damian Garde says Favre’s a trinket from a bygone era.

Speedy Vick leaves Favre behind

Last week, the Earth rattled, rivers ran red and ESPN’s Ed Werder briefly caught fire. The Minnesota Vikings signed Brett Favre. The Internet promptly imploded under the weight of heavy-handed sports journalism.

Linebacker Carmen Messina walks off the field during Tuesday’s practice at the Indoor Practice Facility. Messina has all but locked down the Lobos’ starting middle linebacker position, even though an announcement is yet to be made.

Many Lobo linebackers vying to start

No doubt the UNM football team’s linebacking corps is deep, but the jury is still out on whether they’re all game-ready. They’ve had to adapt to a switch from a 3-3-5 defensive scheme to defensive coordinator Doug Mallory’s 4-3 defense, linebackers coach Toby Neinas said. And how many players the Lobos will rotate at linebacker remains to be seen, Neinas said.

Donovan Porterie launches a ball downfield during Tuesday’s practice at the Indoor Practice Facility. Head coach Mike Locksley has yet to name a starting quarterback, but Porterie is the front-runner.

It’s not hard to predict next Lobo QB

Mike Locksley wants to know what good it does him to clue us in on who’s going to be the UNM football team’s starting quarterback this season. How’s this? Once you officially announce who’s going to be the starting quarterback, Coach, you don’t have to hear any more questions about it. Here we are, 10 days before the Lobos’ Sept.

Lobos limber up in yoga class

At first it sounded like a tacky, made-for-TV testimonial, a way to solicit more players from the UNM football team to join in the yoga sessions held twice a week inside the Indoor Practice Facility.

Effort to save hot-headed player started too late

I can't entirely blame Isaiah Rusher for his shortcomings. That would be too easy. On Wednesday, basketball head coach Steve Alford announced that Rusher was dismissed from the team. "Isaiah needed to go home to Houston and take care of some personal issues," Alford said.

In a December news conference where he was introduced as UNM new head football coach, Mike Locksley talked about having an offense that would light up the scoreboard. But as the season draws near, he said it's equally important to have a solid defense.

Locksley: Poor offense not an option for Lobos

It's become one of the most-often repeated football aphorisms: "Offense wins games, but defense wins championships." But how many championships did the UNM football team win in Rocky Long's defense-oriented program? While UNM ranked 45th in total defense last year, the Lobos were bottom dwellers when it came to offense.

Just take it one game at a time

Realistically, in a season dubbed a "rebuilding year" by pundits, how many games does the UNM football team expect to win? "Our goal is to win one game every week and then count them up at the end," head coach Mike Locksley said. "I'll leave the prognosticating up to you guys.
