UNM hopes to make Texas toast

by Daniel S. Archuleta Daily Lobo Maybe the second time around will have a better ending. The UNM football team will travel for the second week in a row to play Texas Christian University on Saturday. The Lobos are coming off a 21-13 loss at the University of Texas-El Paso last weekend.

Hockey team to break the ice

by Travis Weber Daily Lobo It's hockey season in New Mexico again, and with the absence of the Scorpions this year, members of the UNM Ice Wolves said they want to take center stage. "We really want to be successful so that we can build the program, and so that we can draw some crowds to our home games this year, since we will be the biggest hockey ticket in town," head coach Joel Cormier said.

Defense to be key in conference play

by Steven Fernandez Daily Lobo After four games this season, the Lobo defense is starting to click as the football team heads into conference play. Through the first three games of the season the UNM defense was giving up an average of 26 points and 384 yards per game, relying on offensive production and turnovers to pull out victories.

Staff Report The UNM men's golf team finished tied for sixth place at the PING NCAA Championship Preview on Tuesday. The Lobos shot a 1-under-par 287 in the second round of the tournament in Bend, Ore., at the par-72, 7,671-yard Crosswater Golf Course.

Polls: men's soccer No. 1 in nation

Staff Report For the first time in history, the UNM men's soccer team is the consensus No. 1 team in the country. All four national polls ranked the Lobos No. 1 after a week in which they beat Southern Methodist University 2-0 Friday and Tulsa University 2-1 in overtime Sunday in the Golden Hurricane Classic in Tulsa, Okla.

McKay kicks player off team

Staff Report Aaron Johnson was dismissed from the UNM men's basketball team Sunday by head coach Ritchie McKay. "I am disappointed to announce the dismissal of Aaron Johnson from our men's basketball program due to a violation of team policy," McKay said in a news release.

Volleyball team ends losing streak

Staff Report A nine-year losing streak went down the drain Saturday when the UNM volleyball team beat the Utah Utes. The last time the Lobos beat Utah was 1996, a span that included 17 straight losses to the Utes. With the win, UNM improved to 9-3 on the season - one win short of the team's total last year.

A crowd of 50,425 - the fourth largest in Sun Bowl history - were on hand, most of them covered in orange with a little spot of red for the game.

Duo takes first in doubles

Cautious in the heat of victory

But it didn't matter because things worked out how the Lobos wanted. "Because of the heat and the humidity, we had to get some guys more minutes," said head coach Jeremy Fishbein.

Power pair highlight fall tennis tournament

by David J. Chavez Daily Lobo The UNM women's doubles team of seniors Iva Gersic and Maja Kovacek start another season together Saturday at the UNM Lobo Fall Invitational. Even after a move from across an ocean, some things don't change. "We've known each other for around 12 years now," Gersic said.
