Men's team loses top runner

Just one year after cross country head coach Matt Henry saw his men's team finish in ninth place at the NCAA Championships, the Lobo squad suffered another big loss earlier this summer. After seniors Matt Gonzales, Ben Ortega, Sean Flaherty and Nick Martinez - all key to last year's squad - graduated, Shadrack Biwott packed up his bags and left UNM for The University of Oregon, according to Henry.

Lobos' biggest playmakers ready to lead offense

by Daniel S. Archuleta Daily Lobo The UNM football team may have plenty of playmakers, but quarterback Kole McKamey and running back DonTrell Moore might be the two biggest ones. The Lobos were 6-1 when McKamey and Moore were healthy and finished entire games last season.

Golf team scores 3rd best GPA

Staff Report The UNM women's golf team had the third-best GPA in the nation in the 2004-2005 school year with a cumulative total of 3.628. The Lobos placed five athletes - Giselle Claux, Kailin Downs, Alexandra Phelps, Christina Spence and Ashley Rollins - on the National Golf Coaches Association Scholar Team.

Lobo newcomer can't wait to hear fans howling

by Steven Fernandez Daily Lobo Backup quarterback Chris Nelson said he is excited about his opportunity to step on to the field as a Lobo, and he is focused on helping the team continue its recent success. Nelson, who transferred to UNM in January from Garden City Community College in Kansas, is thrilled about the difference in competition he will be seeing this fall.

Warming up with volleyball vets

by Kelly Brocklehurst Daily Lobo The Lobo volleyball team swept the Lobo Alumni team in an exhibition match Friday night. "It was a good icebreaker," freshman Gayle Tripp said. The Lobos dominated the match, winning straight games 30-15, 30-19, 30-23. In game one, the Alumni scored the first point on an Ingrid Roosild kill, but a service error by Roosild tied the game.

Athletes of the week

Danny Ray Herrera Baseball The sophomore pitcher played in a summer league with the La Crosse Loggers, and in seven games went 5-1 with a 3.13 ERA. He finished the season with 31 strikeouts in 46 innings, and hitters averaged just .201 against him. Jennifer Heasty Volleyball The junior helped the Lobos to a three-straight game win over the UNM Alumni team on Friday.

Grades cost player his spot

by Kristie Boudwin Daily Lobo The UNM men's basketball roster will be one line shorter than anticipated this season. Junior college transfer Justin Holt proved exemplary athleticism is not enough to make The Pit his new home. Holt parted ways with the men's basketball team last week after failing to meet academic expectations over the summer.

Men's soccer builds success

After a 2004 season in which they lost one game, the UNM men's soccer team begins the season ranked No. 6 in the CollegeSoccerNews.com Preseason Top-30 poll. The Lobos return seven starters from a team that went 17-1-2 last year - the only team in the NCAA to have only one loss.

Quarterback ready to prove himself

UNM quarterback Kole McKamey knows people have doubts about whether he can lead the football team in the 2005 season - and he's just fine with that. "My name isn't even in the back of people's heads," he said. "I don't go to Web sites to read about it, or go to any chat rooms.

Moore back on field after injury

Staff Report UNM running back DonTrell Moore was cleared to begin practice Aug. 8. The All-Mountain West Conference player was recovering from a knee injury he suffered in the Lobos' last game of the 2004 season. He sat out all of spring practice. Moore went down in the first quarter of the Lobos' bowl game against Navy on Dec.

High school track champs join Lobos

Staff Report After a season that saw three Lobos compete at the NCAA Championships, UNM's track and field team just got 29 reasons to expect better things in the future. A recruiting class made up of 16 women and 13 men made the final cut for head coach Matt Henry.

Athletes make school their game

All UNM student athletes finished the spring semester with an overall combined GPA of 3.02. That makes it the sixth-straight semester Lobo athletes had a 3.0 grade point average or higher. Leading the way for women's teams was the golf team with a 3.79 GPA.

Two train for Moore's place

by Kristie Boudwin Daily Lobo DonTrell Moore might be coming back, but Rodney Ferguson and Adrian Byrd are already here. With Moore rehabilitating an injured knee, Ferguson and Byrd assume the running back duties for the UNM football team. Quarterback Kole McKamey said he is confident he can rely on other tailbacks if Moore does not return as healthy as anticipated.

Medical all-clear needed to play

by Daniel Archuleta Daily Lobo On a cloudy and rainy day in San Francisco, DonTrell Moore's season ended. His career, however, is still far from over. At last year's Dec. 30 Emerald Bowl against Navy, Moore suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee that required him to have surgery during the offseason.

Former goalkeeper gets big league beginning

by Riley Bauling Daily Lobo He might not have all the amenities that usually come with a professional contract, but Andrew Weber said he's just fine with that. For now, at least. The ex-goalkeeper for the UNM men's soccer team signed a contract with D.C. United of Major League Soccer on June 3.

Receiver an ace up UNM's sleeve

by Kristie Boudwin Daily Lobo Amazing speed and tailback experience could combine to make Marcus Smith a wide receiver that will torment opposing defenses this season. Smith will be a starting wide receiver and return kicks as a sophomore this season for the UNM football team.
