Rams trample UNM in sweep

by Justin Goodrum Daily Lobo After losing two straight doubleheaders to Brigham Young and Utah, the Lobo softball team returned home for a showdown with the Rams. Conference rival Colorado State faced UNM Sunday eager to sweep the season series after winning their home doubleheader in Fort Collins, Colo.

Athletes of the Week

Christine Fernandez women's golf Fernandez tied teammate Ashley Rollins for fourth place at the MWC championships, shooting an 11-over 224. She was also named to the All-MWC team along with Rollins and Kailin Downs. Jordan Pacheco baseball Pacheco was a monster at the plate in UNM's close loss to UNLV with four hits, three runs and three RBIs.

Fifth conference title eludes Lobos

Kailin Downs said she takes all the responsibility for the UNM women's golf team second-place finish in the Mountain West Conference tournament on Saturday. Downs, the highest-ranked individual golfer in the MWC, at No. 22, finished in 10th place with a total score of 15-over par.

Defense prevails in scrimmage

More than 1,000 Lobo fans crowded the sidelines of the practice field Saturday to get a sneak peek of the 2005-06 Lobo football team. The annual Cherry-Silver spring scrimmage is a 90-minute, full-pad contest between the UNM offense and defense. The defense stole the show, causing two turnovers and allowing only three field goals and one touchdown for a total of 16 points.

The ex-Lobo will be at his home in La Marque, Texas, enjoying a nice home-cooked meal with Mom and Dad, cell phone nestled carefully by his side. All of a sudden, family dinner will be interrupted with a ring.

Golfers tie for 3rd in MWC championship

by Riley Bauling Daily Lobo The only difference between women's golfers Christina Spence and Christine Fernandez on Thursday was the last letter of their first names. Senior Spence and junior Fernandez both shot a 1-over-par at the Mountain West Conference Championships in Bend, Ore.

Sharpshooter up for prestigious award

Staff report The accolades keep coming for Spencer Levin. The UNM junior has been selected as one of three finalists for the most prestigious honor in men's college golf - The Ben Hogan Award, which is presented to the top men's NCAA Division I, II, III, NAIA or junior college golfer.

by Steven Fernandez Daily Lobo Amanda Barnes is one of the greatest female throwers in UNM history. The senior is also so much more - a student, a singer and, most importantly, a mother. Barnes, a native of Carlsbad, is a two-time defending Mountain West Conference Champion in the shot put.

Arizona clobbers Lobos

by Kelly Brocklehurst Daily Lobo The No. 5 Wildcats were hot on the mound and at the plate. The Lobo pitching staff gave up six home runs during Tuesday night's game against Arizona. UNM lost the game, 14-3. The Lobos' bats couldn't overcome the deficit they faced early in the game.

Hantavirus is a deadly disease, but to a small group of students at UNM, it is also a passion. That's because it's the name of UNM's Ultimate Frisbee club team. It is likely you have seen Hantavirus around campus - all you have to do is go by Johnson Field most weekday afternoons to see team members practice.

Charlie Beljan men's golf Beljan finished in third place at The Aggie Invitational this weekend. He was just behind teammate Spencer Levin, who tied for first and helped the No. 5 Lobos finish second overall. Tiffany Robertson women's tennis Robertson easily handled her Air Force opponents.

Seniors Tiffany Robertson and Michelle Heidbrink played their last matches at the Lobo Tennis Club against the struggling Air Force Falcons.

Staff report Another bench player from this year's Mountain West Conference Tournament champion Lobo team has decided to part ways with the program. Sean Phaler announced he will leave the UNM basketball team, citing personal reasons that are "unrelated to basketball.

Squad shapes up for season

The left side of the UNM Track and Soccer Complex doesn't bear any resemblance to a snowy slope. But that's not stopping sophomore alpine skier Lars Loeseth from pulling double duty for the Lobo men's soccer team. Loeseth played left midfielder for the UNM men's soccer team, scoring two goals in the Lobos' 4-0 exhibition win over Fort Lewis and 2-2 tie with Air Force on Saturday.

Lobos ground Air Force

by Kelly Brocklehurst Daily Lobo Jeff Grady and Matt Foote had back-to-back home runs in Sunday's doubleheader against the Air Force Falcons. The Lobos went on to sweep the series from the Falcons, winning the first game 18-7 and the second game 12-6. In the second game, the Falcons took an early lead, scoring five runs.

UNM to Pack the Park for Air Force

Air Force (5-23, 0-9 MWC) is having a bad season. The team is coming off a three-game series against Utah, which left the Falcons still searching for their first Mountain West Conference win.

Blood was rushing into his eye. John Dodson thought the fight was over. Then his opponent grabbed his ankle, and the referee said he wasn't done yet. "I had a cut on my eye because I got headbutted," he said. "It was the worst day of my life.
