Lobo misses out on Athens

Matt Gonzales won't be heading to Athens next month, but he can be proud of his performance at the Olympic trials in Sacramento, Calif. The UNM junior placed sixth in the finals of the 5,000-meter run. The top three finishers qualified for this summer's Olympics.

Homegrown players lead Lobo football

For the first time in UNM history, three native New Mexicans were named captains of the Lobo football team. This week, junior DonTrell Moore and seniors Claude Terrell, Josh Bazinet and Nick Speegle were elected captains for the 2004 team. Moore is from Roswell, Bazinet and Speegle both went to high school in Albuquerque, and Terrell is from LaMarque, Texas.

Coaches vote in favor of fifth year of eligibility

by Kristie Boudwin Daily Lobo The 195 Division I men's basketball coaches unanimously voted to support a proposal that could significantly change college basketball. The National Association of Basketball Coaches is proposing changes to NCAA rules regarding eligibility and player-coach communication.

Lobo runner goes the distance

Matt Gonzales is a top-three finish from going to Athens after winning the first heat in the men's 5,000-meter semifinals on Monday with a time of 13 minutes, 44.19 seconds. The final race in the U.S. Olympic track and field trials takes place on Friday in Sacramento, Calif.

Lobo hoops lose 4th player

Justin Benson became the fourth Lobo to leave the men's basketball team when late last month he announced he would be heading to Oklahoma Baptist University. Benson said in June he would leave the team to play tight end on UNM's football team, but changed his mind and instead will continue playing basketball for the NAIA Bisons.

Engineer scores MWC award

It is not easy being a student and an athlete, but baseball player Sean Murray has both roles down to a science. Murray, who balances his time between being a civil engineering major and the Lobos' first baseman, has been chosen as the 2004 Mountain West Conference Male Student Athlete of the Year.

Sports column:NBA picks'em younger and younger

by Reid Wessels Daily Lobo I had a revelation about my age while watching the NBA draft last week - a sort of mid-20s life crisis. For the first time in my 26 years on this planet, I felt just a little bit old. "With the first pick in the NBA draft, the Orlando Magic select Dwight Howard, Atlanta Southwest Christian High School," NBA Commissioner David Stern said.

UNM golfer got Tiger beat

Staff Report Lobo men's golf team member Spencer Levin left quite a mark at the 104th U.S. Open last weekend, finishing tied for 13th place overall. Levin finished the tournament ahead of the likes of Tiger Woods, Sergio Garcia and Vijay Singh. The UNM sophomore shot 5-over par in the final round Sunday on brutal, unfriendly course conditions and was 8-over par for the tournament.

Athletes work out, earn strong honors

Playing professional football has been a childhood dream of Lobo offensive lineman Claude Terrell. As UNM's strongest male athlete, he is perhaps the best candidate. Terrell who weighs about 320 pounds, can bench press 450 pounds and squat 650, Strength Coordinator Mark Paulsen said.

NFL player returns the favor

Brian Urlacher's high school football coach Speedy Faith said Urlacher is a 12-year-old boy in the body of an NFL player. "He really enjoys being out with the kids," Faith said. "You can't explain the way he is when he gets on the football field with a bunch of kids.

Major League drafts 3 from UNM

Three UNM baseball players were picked up by the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft on Tuesday. Senior pitcher Joe Salas went to the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 24th round, junior shortstop Josh Mader was selected by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 29th round, and junior pitcher Cooper Eddy was taken by the Boston Red Sox in the 36th round.

Golfer shoots for excellence

Even though the Lobos came up short of winning the national title, junior Kailin Downs has something big to celebrate. Downs is the recipient of the prestigious Edith Cummings Munson Golf Award for the 2003-04 season. The award is presented to one NCAA women's golf player each year based on academic and athletic achievement.

Women's Tennis The season is finally over for UNM tennis doubles pair Sandy Lukowski and Maja Kovacek. The pair lost to the Marshall University duo of Jessica Johnson and Ashley Kroh in the semifinals of the NCAA Doubles Tournament on Friday in Athens, Ga.

Hnida granted sixth year of eligibility

UNM pole vaulter looks to land on MWC podium

Junior Bridgid Isworth is not only the indoor, outdoor and UNM stadium champion in the pole vault, she is also the third-ranked pole vaulter in Australia and 34th-ranked in the world. But the Melbourne, Australia native said she still gets an anxious feeling every time she jumps.

Lobos swinging to nationals

by Travis Weber Daily Lobo The UNM women's golf team advanced to the national championships on May 18-21 in Auburn, Alabama, with a seventh-place finish this weekend in the regional tournament in Normal, Illinois. The Lobos finished 66-over-par - 20 strokes behind champion Vanderbilt, which was just good enough to move on as the top eight teams from all three regions advanced.
