Editor, The morning-after pill proves we live in a society that attempts to avoid the consequences of its mistakes. Can we avoid the consequences of living for the moment? Can one night of passion be wiped away with a single pill? It is sad to think that we can justify the frivolity of our lives by simply erasing the consequences of our actions.

Encouraging graduation

Hiring students to work at UNM might help them graduate sooner. "We know that working off campus correlates negatively with graduation rates," Provost Reed Dasenbrock said. "There's a strong push in here to increase the amount of employment opportunities on campus." Dasenbrock started a committee in June to identify the factors affecting graduation rates at UNM. The six-year graduation rate for entering freshmen in fall 2000 is 43.3 percent. He released the Graduation Task Force's report Jan. 25. The report gives eight strategies to improve graduation and retention rates.

Additional tuition increase would be unfair to students

Editor, Feb. 16 is UNM's day to lobby the New Mexico Legislature. This year, we are asking them to not increase the tuition credit, which increases tuition. Tuition was increased by 11 percent last year, so an additional increase would be outrageous. ASUNM and the Progressive Action Coalition are encouraging all UNM students to get involved.

Runner takes on new challenge
