Replacement QB ready to lead Lobos this season

The UNM football team will face its toughest test of the season Saturday - taking on Missouri without starting quarterback Kole McKamey. McKamey is out for the season after tearing his left anterior and lateral cruciate ligament on the third play of last week's 34-28 victory over NMSU.

Letter: Protesting doesn't solve America's social problems

Editor, In spite of himself, Brian Fejer did have a good idea about Sept. 11, 2001, in his letter in Tuesday's Daily Lobo. It's time we as Americans do something besides maintain a quiet, one-hour vigil once a year. However, I do not agree with Fejer's protest ideas.

Centennial breaks ground

Student Sarah Shannon was excited to see a dirt lot where Wagner Hall once stood. "Everything was rusty. Everything was just really awful in there," said Shannon, a civil engineering graduate student. "So, I think it's a good thing we're getting a new building." More than 150 people gathered north of the Mechanical Engineering Building on Wednesday to celebrate the groundbreaking for the Centennial Engineering Center.

UNM slam poets embrace criticism

For poet Damien Flores, slam poetry is an art that defies boundaries. "It's something everyone can get into," he said. Flores is the president of UNM Lobo Slam, a group of student poets who have garnered national attention in the past year. Flores was a member of the team representing UNM at the 2005 National Poetry Slam, a competition the team went on to win.

It is now customary on Sept. 11 for commentators and news outlets to revisit the horrors and heroism of that infamous day. The selfless courage of America's first responders who defied terror is valorized, and the thousands who died are re-embraced in mourning.

Students face charges for role in Bookstore theft

The Dean of Students Office is charging 17 students for violating UNM's code of conduct for their involvement in theft at the UNM Bookstore, said Randy Boeglin, dean of students. Students were taking books and other merchandise and then reselling the items, Boeglin said. They were also taking books for their own use, he said. Between $50,000 and $100,000 in merchandise and money was lost from the theft, said David Harris, UNM's acting president.

Letter: Bible advocates genocide; read with extreme caution

Editor, In the Bible, Samson was a suicide bomber. He prayed to God to strengthen him to do revenge and to murder thousands of the enemy. The building Samson destroyed was full of men and women, and 3,000 more people were on the roof. Samson killed more people in his suicide bombing than the hijackers on Sept.

Mistakes costly in rivalry match

Staff Report The UNM volleyball team lost 3-0 to rival NMSU on Monday night. The loss drops the Lobos to 4-7, while NMSU improves to 11-0. Freshman Anna Lehne led UNM with 11 kills in the match, while sophomore Gayle Tripp had a team-high 12 digs. Amber Simpson led the Aggies in the match with 10 kills, while Jordan Bostic recorded a team-high 13 digs.

Peace Corps seeks more UNM recruits

Sharon Sugarek, the regional director for Peace Corps, said UNM has a good pool of students for the program. In the past couple years, many UNM students with backgrounds in health and social work have gone into Peace Corps, she said.
