MTS’s ‘Sweeney Todd’ deadly

Even if you’re not a screaming Goth girl or if you somehow missed the Tim Burton adaptation, you can still walk into “Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street” and probably know what you’re in for. The Musical Theater Southwest’s production is mercilessly long, totaling around three hours. Maybe it’s heresy, but can’t we cut some of these songs?

The room is painted black. The only light comes from three narrow spotlights, one near the door and two others on the opposite side of the room. Under the first spotlight spins a potato on a fishing line.

Cuba explored through poetry

Usually when one imagines a poetry reading, the image involves a single speaker under a spotlight reading from a note card or reciting verse from memory. Santa Fe group Teatro Paraguas is changing that image one reading at a time.

Holocaust memoir gripping

It is hard to imagine what anyone would do to survive in the midst of war. Would you chat up the guards for better rations? Would you lie to other prisoners if it meant not admitting to yourself that they were going to die? Would you sleep with enemy soldiers for warmth and protection?

Poverty play is poor in pacing

The question to ask, when presented with a story and its characters, laughter, tragedies and success becomes, “Do you believe?” If you have to ask that question time and time again throughout a single play, you might have a problem. The Vortex’s newest production of Sam Shepard’s play “Curse of the Starving Class” comprises many moments, both good and bad.
