Letter: Offering Katrina victims abortion commendable

Editor, I am writing in response to Benjamin Sanchez's anti-abortion letter. It appalls me that he so ardently attacks Katrina victims' right to choose and states that the "abortion mentality" is based upon a negative view of human life. Obviously, we should work to reduce the need for abortion, but the fact is, the need for abortion will never go away until we, as a country, can achieve two goals: better access to the most effective contraceptive options and better access to other kinds of reproductive health care and information.

Letter: Bush supporters voted to restrict freedoms

Editor, In response to Rebekah Casey's letter in Monday's Daily Lobo: Irony of ironies, President Bush didn't have a plurality when he was initially elected to office. I'll grant you he won the popular vote in the last election, but let's also be fair about one thing - the conflict in Iraq wasn't the only issue for which people were casting their ballots.

Column: Voting still a murky affair

by Colin Donoghue Daily Lobo columnist Earlier this week, I went to the early-voting location in Downtown Albuquerque and cast my vote for mayor, the minimum wage and the financing of elections, among other ballot measures. When leaving the polling booth, I noticed on the back of the electronic vote-tabulating machines there was a label that said "Modem Equipped.

Editorial: Casting a vote on Tuesday gets student voices heard

I attended the public hearing on Mayor Martin Ch†vez's proposal to ban alcohol sales at all-ages shows on Aug. 29. UNM student Adam Hevey spoke at the hearing, with a message to Ch†vez: "I am under 21, but I am a voter, and he would be wise not to forget that.

Letter: Self-pitying liberals distort Bush's fight for democracy

Editor, This letter is in response to Brian Fejer's letter in Tuesday's Daily Lobo headlined, "Cowardly Americans get what they deserve." Are you an American citizen? Do you pay taxes? Do you vote? If so, I would imagine you would realize that President George Bush is in office because the majority of American citizens voted for him to lead the country.

Letter: Free abortion offer reveals pessimistic view of life

Editor, In the aftermath of the two hurricanes that struck the Gulf Coast, there has been an amazing outpouring of charity on the part of many people. It seems that everyone of goodwill has felt the desire to help. Moved by the suffering of those affected by the hurricanes, even an abortion clinic in Arkansas has felt the desire to help.

Letter: Legal immigrants hassled more than illegals at MVD

Editor, I read that Gov. Richardson signed legislation into law allowing illegal immigrants to get a state-issued driver's license and also allowing children of illegal immigrants to qualify for resident college tuition. How nice. Since the Constitution of the United States guarantees me the right to free speech, I am going to exercise that right now.

Column: How to save Democrats

by Andrew Price Daily Lobo columnist I'm jumping ship. No more Democrat or liberal bashing, no more endless conservative Republican rants, and no more urges to throw things when you read my columns. I'm becoming one of you - I am now a liberal Democrat.

Letter: Minimum-wage increase ignores larger problem

Editor, The campaign for the minimum-wage increase says New Mexico should increase its state minimum wage to $7.15 an hour to help reduce poverty and benefit working families struggling in low-wage jobs. But while New Mexico's disorganized labor unions insult the working class with a fantasy campaign to legislate a $2 per hour increase to the minimum wage, real-life economics dictate that today's minimum wage should be at least $12.

Column: More than a climate crisis

by Maceo Carrillo Martinet Daily Lobo columnist David Suzuki, a world-renowned scientist and educator, described how society is confronting the environmental crisis: We are all in a car heading toward a brick wall at 100 miles per hour and we are fighting over who is sitting where.

Letter: UNM owes explanation for Berthold's dismissal

Editor, I wrote a letter expressing my concerns about the decision regarding Richard Berthold to Provost Dasenbrock, and his reply simply told me that Berthold knows why he is not getting hired. Basically, in a polished way, he was telling me to piss off.

Letter: Role of religion should be discussed in University

Editor, Do students face an anti-religious bias in the intellectual climate at the University of New Mexico? A letter to the editor published last month in the Daily Lobo argues they do, while a series of other letters followed, arguing UNM is a much more welcoming place for both religious and conservative viewpoints.

Letter: Last-minute road trip not a healthy answer to oil crisis

Editor, As Dane Roberts correctly summarized in his column Tuesday, you don't know what you've got till it's gone, so you should appreciate what you have before it goes the way of subsistence agriculture and flared trousers. A worthwhile, if hackneyed, piece of advice.

Column: Protest to save democracy

by Colin Donoghue Daily Lobo columnist My feet still hurt. Sunday night, I left Washington, D.C., to head back to New Mexico with other Green Party members from a massive demonstration and march against the war in Iraq and for the impeachment of President George Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney.

Letter: Cowardly Americans get the leaders they deserve

Editor, I used to think most Americans were good people who would resist a fascist military dictatorship, but I was wrong. I read that, according to Human Rights Watch, some U.S. troops occupying Iraq break the legs of Iraqi prisoners with baseball bats for sport.
