Can we compare the Nazi swastika with the UNM seal? The Nazis used the swastika to represent their attitudes of superiority toward a lot of the world’s people regardless of skin color. Yet, the swastika is still used by people today. So it would only be fair to believe that people follow that philosophy.
Now that the semester is ending, many students will be seeking new living arrangements. For those desiring new apartments or houses in the UNM area, my experiences between the beginning of the 2016 spring semester and spring break may serve as a wake-up call to older students, especially if they happen to be questioning, assertive women. In my opinion, my experiences reflect, at best, a subjective attitude on the part of landlords, and at worst, age and gender discrimination.

The Department of Justice’s report, released last Friday, detailing the cracks in UNM's approach to combating sexual harassment and assault, is a jarring read. But, in many respects, President Bob Frank’s response later that same day was just as concerning. Frank and other University officials said that the DOJ report doesn’t represent the whole story, that UNM has prioritized the problem by conducting its own investigation, and that they have already implemented a variety of tools and procedures that can be utilized, including opening the LoboRESPECT center and establishing a 24/7 hotline.

Thus in Albuquerque, what exactly happened when a paranoid schizophrenic camper in the Sandia foothills had a police dog sent at him? One report stated that the dog had been sent to bite him. Even a normal, innocent person would be terrified enough to fight back instinctively and with no time for thought when a dog is coming at you off leash.

I just read the article cited in President Frank’s Weekly Perspective – 4.25.2016, “Justice Department Releases Findings of UNM’s Response to Sexual Assaults On Campus,” and noted what President Frank said with some dismay: that UNM faces the “impossible goal” of stopping sexual assaults because, in part, they frequently occur in “incredibly complex situations” and “involve alcohol and drugs.”
Political rumors cloud the logic behind the UNM Regents’ decision to reintegrate the Health Sciences Center with main campus. To clarify, the vote essentially returned the HSC Governing Board from a semi-autonomous entity back to a sub-committee of the Regents. This adjustment is a state Constitution requisite, and is identical to how HSC was managed for many years prior to a change in 2010. Like every other major enterprise on campus, HSC now has its own specific sub-committee for all of its academic, clinical and financial affairs.
The sport of top-level mountaineering should be done with the pure spirit of using one’s own physical prowess and endurance to reach the top, not the use of coolies to carry one’s stuff and otherwise attend to one’s every need, besides giving the mountaineer a leg up when needed and showing them the easier, gentler, safer path upward. That is cheating.
There has been a recent brouhaha in the corporate and Zionist-dominated media in regards to the role of Saudi Arabia in the 9-11 attacks. It has been said that President Obama is considering declassifying 28 classified pages of the 9-11 commission report which speaks of Saudi's involvement in the 9-11 attacks.
When I saw the Department of Justice’s findings on how UNM has been handling instances of assault on campus, I was sadly not surprised. In case you missed it, UNM’s handlings of reports “fail to comply with federal law”. What is the school planning to do about this? I’m getting really tired of nearly every month receiving some kind of notification that an assault has happened, only to see it described as a “groping” or “unwanted hugging”.
A certain naive attitude persists on campus about its relative safety and the measures in place to protect students. To be blunt, cold and sobering, I have to say that the University’s passive security measures are inadequate to protect students, especially those whose schedule has them out on the fringes of campus after dark. If one has trouble believing this reality, look no further than the most recent Lobo Alert that was sent out to us. A student was attacked just before 9 p.m. on April 21, and the best the University could do for those of us around was to send a text five and a half hours after the incident.
I constantly collect wisdom every day in order to live it. We have much to learn from other cultures. The native Tiruray people, who lived in the southern Philippines in the 1960s, enjoyed complete equality between men and women. Men were not above women, women were not above men – in any way. A spirit of harmony – no battles of men against women, no battles of women against men. Caring, non-violence, warmth, nurturing, sharing and empathy were not considered feminine qualities; they were human qualities – the right way for both men and women to be. Bravery, confidence, clear thinking, boldness in sex and boldness in conversation were not considered masculine qualities; they were human qualities – the right way for both men and women to be. Toughness, dominating others and taking advantage of others was not right for men or women. Men and women deeply understood and helped each other.
ld like to take this opportunity to address Hillary Clinton supporters. If you are not aware by now, then there is a certain faction within our government known as the neoconservatives or "neo cons" for short. This group published a paper called "Rebuilding America's Defenses" in which they argued that after the collapse of the Soviet Union, the United States should use its superior military strength to dominate the rest of the world by the barrel of a gun.
I sure like food, don’t you? Without food, as a matter of fact, there would stop being people. We are getting closer and closer to running out of bees that pollinate over 70 percent of our foods. In the last year, over 50 percent of bee colonies died in New Mexico due to a recently popular pesticide called Neonics.
As a native New Mexican and a college student, I care a lot about having clean drinking water in this city. Not having clean drinking water is a big problem for all of us. But it's especially a big problem for our kids and future generations of New Mexicans. Growing up in New Mexico my father and I went on a lot of river rafting trips in New Mexico on rivers like the Rio Chama and a lot of the other rivers.
I drink no booze. Booze has devastated the lives of many of my friends. Booze causes car crashes, paralyzing and killing thousands, including my niece Rachel. Booze causes awful family fights, ruined romances, horrible holiday memories ... I do not want to make it easier for me to say or do things I later terribly regret. Men wake up in jail not remembering stabbing their wife or buddy while drunk the night before.
