Column: 'Madden 2006' foretells victories for Denver, Carolina

by Andre van der Merwe Daily Lobo I don't really want to seem like a bandwagon-jumper or anything, but to increase my odds of picking the two teams to meet in Super Bowl XL, I'm definitely going to have to do some jumping here. My pick for the 2006 Super Bowl is - trumpets playing in background - of course, the Patriots taking on Chicago.

Ex-Lobos try out for MLS

by Riley Bauling Daily Lobo You didn't see ex-UNM soccer players Brandon Moss, Jeff Rowland and Lance Watson on the first day of classes. Actually, you won't see them at all this semester. The three just got finished playing at the Major League Soccer Combine in Carson, Calif., in front of MLS general managers, coaches and scouts Thursday through Sunday. None of them are enrolled in classes at UNM, even though they all still have some credits to take for their degrees.

Lobo defense steals the show

by Steven Fernandez Daily Lobo Heading into Saturday's game at The Pit, UNM head coach Don Flanagan had a magic number in mind for his women's basketball team to defeat Wyoming. The magic number was 55 - as in the maximum number of points Wyoming should score if the Lobos were to come out with a win.

2nd-half offense erupts in blowout

by Andre van der Mewre Daily Lobo The UNM women's basketball team trampled the Cowgirls of Wyoming 62-39 Saturday at The Pit. However, it wasn't until the second half that the Lobos (13-4 overall, 3-1 Mountain West Conference) started to pull away in their victory over Wyoming (12-3, 2-2).

Rowland comes in second for trophy

by Riley Bauling Daily Lobo Coming in second this time didn't bother Jeff Rowland at all. The senior UNM men's soccer player was runner-up for the Hermann Trophy Award given to the nation's top college soccer player on Friday at the Missouri Athletic Club in St.

UNM shears Rams 83-75

by Riley Bauling Daily Lobo Ritchie McKay wasn't sure why the UNM men's basketball team shot a season-high field-goal percentage in the Lobos' 83-75 win over Colorado State on Saturday night. It could have been that the Lobos wanted to put on a show for the 16,201 in attendance - the most this season at The Pit - or maybe it was the return of Joel Box - who quit on Dec.

Newbie makes his mark

by Riley Bauling Daily Lobo Freshman Daniel Faris couldn't have picked a better time to chip in the first points of his Lobo career. Or play tough defense against two seven-footers. Or toss an elbow or two to show he wasn't backing down. The 6-foot-9-inch Faris, the tallest person on the Lobos other than 6-9 David Chiotti, was called on to try to shut down Colorado State's sophomore twin towers Stuart Creason and Jason Smith in UNM's 83-75 win against the Rams on Saturday night. Right from the start, Faris let Creason know that, freshman or not, he'll battle just the same.

Senior's versatility honored with MVP

by Steven Fernandez Daily Lobo Through the first nine games of the 2005 season, Abbie Letz has established herself as one of the UNM women's basketball team's main scoring threats, especially from beyond the three-point line. In Saturday night's game against North Dakota State, it was Letz's versatility that was key in securing another UNM victory.

Lobos grab Bison by horns

by Andre van der Merwe Daily Lobo North Dakota State wouldn't go down that easily. That didn't stop the UNM women's basketball team as it kicked its defense up a notch in the second half to secure a 75-59 victory at The Pit on Saturday night. The win gave No.

Column: College basketball full of wonderfully inept people

by Riley Bauling Daily Lobo People like Larry Eustachy and Bob Huggins make me love college basketball. Ooh, and JamesOn Curry. And not just for his ridiculous excuse of a name. The only problem is deciding who of these three is more deserving of the Pee-pee-in-my-pants-because-I'm-laughing-so-hard (PIMPBILSH) Award, which, my friends, is highly coveted despite contrary belief.

7 Lobos win football accolades

Staff Report The UNM football season has come to an end, and this time there will be no bowl game. The Lobos (6-5) received a conditional invite to the Fort Worth Bowl in Texas, but were not selected in the end. The Big 12 will send Kansas (6-5) to play against Houston (6-5) from Conference USA in that one.

Shared origin, shared goal

by Riley Bauling Daily Lobo Senior Brandon Moss can't even remember the last time he played against Randy Albright. Albright, a senior outside midfielder for the Clemson Tigers - UNM's opponent in the national semifinals - and Moss played together from when they were 12 years old until they went to college.
