Young but optimistic Lobos can't wait to play

by Steven Fernandez Daily Lobo There aren't many familiar faces on the 2005 men's tennis team. That's because nearly half the team is composed of freshman. Assistant coach Loren Dils said despite having a whole crop of young players, he thinks this team can still be great.

Top teams face hard course

Tucker Intercollegiate tournament at the UNM Championship Golf Course includes Mark Anderson, Jay Choi, Charlie Beljan, Robb Bierbaum and Nick Geyer.

Lobo offense climbs charts

After a fast start this season, however, the Lobo offense looks like it is ready to make a name for itself. After beating the University of Nevada-Las Vegas at home and Big-12 Missouri on the road, the UNM offense has put up some impressive numbers.

Lobos bring home 4-0 record

by Riley Bauling Daily Lobo After two straight road trips, the players on the Lobo men's soccer team can finally unpack their bags. And sleep in their own beds, too. The No. 3-ranked Lobos beat West Virginia on Sunday 2-0, and took down South Florida on Friday night 3-2 in Dallas, Texas, at the Southern Methodist University Radisson Hotel Classic to start the season 4-0.

Spiking their way to the top

by Riley Bauling Daily Lobo The Lobo volleyball team's big three showed up in a big way in the Montana Invitational. Chelsea Sondrup, Nicole Ryan and Kelly Therkelsen made the all-tournament team and were pivotal in helping the Lobos take all three matches in the tournament to win the championship, head coach Kelley McKee said.

Team peels apart Syracuse Orange

by Justin Goodrum Daily Lobo With only two goals in five games, the UNM women's soccer team was looking to show off its offensive firepower. The Syracuse Orange ended up the victims of the Lobos' offensive showcase Sunday, losing 3-0 at the UNM Soccer Complex.

Runner takes 1st on home course

by Steven Fernandez Daily Lobo Jacquelyne Gallegos won her first collegiate race in dominating fashion Saturday at the Lobo Invitational cross country meet, leading the Lobo women's team to a third-place finish. Gallegos started fast and kept pace with the lead pack early, before surging and putting a big gap between her and the rest of the field.

Tennis courts get double trouble

by Kevin McFarland Daily Lobo Regionally ranked UNM men's tennis doubles partners Max Jones and Kamil Pajkowski have plenty of chemistry on the tennis court. That might be because they get along pretty well off it. "We definitely have a big connection," Jones said.

Men's golf takes on new leader

by Travis Weber Daily Lobo Coming off its most successful season since the late '70s and a fifth-place finish in the NCAA Championships, the UNM men's golf team will look to senior Jay Choi to lead it. The team will take on an entirely new makeup this year after suffering the loss of three major players and the assistant coach.

Car accident fails to slow down Lobo

by Steven Fernandez Daily Lobo After suffering injuries in a 2002 car accident, Jacquelyne Gallegos was not supposed to be able to run again. Three years and an NCAA Championship appearance later, the senior cross country runner said she plans to keep shocking people this season.

Soccer's own Cinderella story

But the rags-to-riches part, he's got that down. Rowland, a senior on the Lobo men's soccer team and the second leading scorer in the country last year, came out of high school unrecruited and unwanted.

Receiver catches positive attention

by Kristie Boudwin Daily Lobo UNM football fans and NFL scouts have something in common this season. They are all watching wide receiver Hank Baskett. According to an NFL scout who said he wanted to remain anonymous for team confidentiality reasons, the 6-foot-4-inch 220-pound senior is on preseason scouting lists and has the potential to play professional ball if he performs well this season.

Women's golfer excels at family business

by David Chavez Daily Lobo When Christine Fernandez was little, her dad thought it would be a good business move to start playing golf. It turned out to be a good move for her too. The senior Lobo women's golfer grew up in Las Vegas, Nev., where her dad started playing golf to compete with his business associates.

Improvement of one benefits entire team

by Steven Fernandez Daily Lobo Last year's most improved player on the Lobo women's tennis team said she still has room to improve. That should bode well for the rest of her team. Head coach Kathy Kolankiewicz said junior Nora Quintal should be a key to UNM's success this year, after making a big progression last year.
