Phil Vs. Riley

by Phil Parker Daily Lobo Let's take a look back at the draft history of the ooey-gooey Cleveland Brownies, the perpetual team du jour in the mind of this slap-happy sportswriter. 1999 - The team is back! And with its first pick, the reincarnated Browns select Tim Couch, who will go on to throw more interceptions than touchdowns, sit out the team's lone run to the playoffs, cry about justifiable boos from the fans, then be dumped and completely out of the league by 2004.

Ultimate Frisbee team lets fun fly

Hantavirus is a deadly disease, but to a small group of students at UNM, it is also a passion. That's because it's the name of UNM's Ultimate Frisbee club team. It is likely you have seen Hantavirus around campus - all you have to do is go by Johnson Field most weekday afternoons to see team members practice.

Charlie Beljan men's golf Beljan finished in third place at The Aggie Invitational this weekend. He was just behind teammate Spencer Levin, who tied for first and helped the No. 5 Lobos finish second overall. Tiffany Robertson women's tennis Robertson easily handled her Air Force opponents.

by Justin Goodrum Daily Lobo Senior day for UNM's women's tennis began with the Lobos staring at a potential regular season Mountain West title. It ended with the team secured in second place. Seniors Tiffany Robertson and Michelle Heidbrink played their last matches at the Lobo Tennis Club against the struggling Air Force Falcons.

Forward leaves Lobos for 'personal reasons'

Staff report Another bench player from this year's Mountain West Conference Tournament champion Lobo team has decided to part ways with the program. Sean Phaler announced he will leave the UNM basketball team, citing personal reasons that are "unrelated to basketball.

Squad shapes up for season

The left side of the UNM Track and Soccer Complex doesn't bear any resemblance to a snowy slope. But that's not stopping sophomore alpine skier Lars Loeseth from pulling double duty for the Lobo men's soccer team. Loeseth played left midfielder for the UNM men's soccer team, scoring two goals in the Lobos' 4-0 exhibition win over Fort Lewis and 2-2 tie with Air Force on Saturday.

Lobos ground Air Force

by Kelly Brocklehurst Daily Lobo Jeff Grady and Matt Foote had back-to-back home runs in Sunday's doubleheader against the Air Force Falcons. The Lobos went on to sweep the series from the Falcons, winning the first game 18-7 and the second game 12-6. In the second game, the Falcons took an early lead, scoring five runs.

UNM to Pack the Park for Air Force

by Daniel Schrader Daily Lobo UNM baseball has been beating up on Air Force. The Lobos have won 13 straight contests against the Falcons, whom they host this weekend for a three-game series. Air Force (5-23, 0-9 MWC) is having a bad season. The team is coming off a three-game series against Utah, which left the Falcons still searching for their first Mountain West Conference win.

Blood was rushing into his eye. John Dodson thought the fight was over. Then his opponent grabbed his ankle, and the referee said he wasn't done yet. "I had a cut on my eye because I got headbutted," he said. "It was the worst day of my life. I wanted to debut as a standup fighter, and I came out swinging and got headbutted and just thought, 'Damn.

Lobos face coach's former team

Jeremy Fishbein said he doesn't have any plans to punish his team if it loses to Fort Lewis College on Saturday. The head coach of the UNM men's soccer team coached Fort Lewis from 1992 to 1998. It was his first college coaching job, but he said he's not worried about Saturday's game carrying any hints of a rivalry.

Cricket Club eyes recruits

by Steven Fernandez Daily Lobo Want to try your hand at wicket keeping? Think you might make a good bowler? The UNM Cricket Club is looking for members. Two years ago, the team won the Tex-N-Mex tournament, and last year it won the One World Memorial Tournament in Colorado.

Derek Mackel track and field The senior pole vaulter cleared a personal record 17 feet, 8 1/2 inches to place third at the Texas Relays in Austin. The height was the second best in the Mountain West Conference this year and fifth best in MWC history. Whitney Johnson track and field The freshman pole vaulter soared her way to an NCAA regional qualifying mark of 12 feet, 11 1/2 inches at the Texas Relays in Austin.

Downs does double duty for UNM's golf and volleyball teams by Riley Bauling Daily Lobo Not many people can say they have played golf with actor and comedian Bill Murray. UNM women's golfer Kailin Downs can't, but that's because he caddied for her instead. Downs got her chance to hang out with Murray for two rounds when he toted her bags around the Sleepy Hollow Golf Course in Scarborough, N.

Arndt, Moore to skip draft

The WNBA draft is coming up on Saturday, but you won't find any UNM women's basketball players in it. Graduating seniors Lindsey Arndt and Mandi Moore are eligible for the draft, but neither of them will participate in it, UNM women's basketball head coach Don Flanagan said.

UNM racquetball takes 5th at nationals

UNM earned a spot as a national competitor in yet another sport this season when Lobo club racquetball placed fifth in the nation. The team traveled to Tempe, Ariz., to compete individually and as a team in the USA Racquetball National Intercollegiate Championship for the second consecutive year.

North Carolina nabs NCAA title

by Eddie Pells The Associate Press ST. LOUIS - Of course, there was no way it was going to be easy. North Carolina did it, though, and now it's time to stop asking Roy Williams that doggone question. Sean May had 26 points and the Tar Heels didn't allow a basket over the final excruciating 2 1/2 minutes Monday night to defeat Illinois 75-70, a win that finally gave Williams, a 17-year coaching veteran, the national championship that was missing from his otherwise stellar rÇsumÇ.
