Lobos show Sul Ross who's boss

UNM's Lobos had no problem handling the Division III team that shared their namesake at the Pit on Saturday. The Sul Ross State Lobos fell convincingly to UNM 94-63, giving UNM its second-straight exhibition win. The Lobos beat Eastern New Mexico on Nov.

Men's golf ties for 8th in Georgia tournament The UNM men's golf team finished in a tie for eighth place at the Carpet Capital Collegiate in Rock Face, Ga. The Lobos shot a 15-over par 303 in the third round to end the tournament at 36-over. Georgia won the team title with a final score of 15-over par.

Volleyball smashes last-place Air Force

Staff Report The Lobo volleyball team took down cellar-dwellers Air Force on Friday night at Johnson Center. UNM (8-15, 2-12 in the Mountain West Conference) swept the visiting Falcons (4-18, 0-12 MWC) in three games, 30-20, 30-20 and 30-27. The story of the night was junior Chelsea Sondrup and her six blocks.

Undefeated diver propels team to 3rd-place finish

by Steven Fernandez Daily Lobo The UNM women's swimming and diving team finished third in the 2004 Lobo Fall Classic at the Seidler Natatorium on Saturday. The Lobo women ended up with 818 points, winner BYU took 1,122 points and second-place Northern Arizona had 961.

Becca Barras Diving The UNM diver took first place in the one-meter and three-meter diving competitions at the Lobo Fall Classic. The senior is undefeated this year. David Chiotti Basketball The senior forward helped the UNM men's basketball team to a 94-63 exhibition win against visiting Sul Ross State.

National tourney in future for Lobo men

The UNM men's soccer team is going to need a pair of dancing shoes to go along with its soccer cleats come Nov. 15. The Lobos took down the Sacramento State Hornets 1-0 in Sacramento on Sunday to grab an automatic bid to the big dance, otherwise known as the NCAA tournament.

Lobos avenge old battle wounds

Ever since last year's bench-clearing brawl, the UNM men's soccer team has had a bad taste in its mouth. The San Jose State Spartans took the Lobos down 3-2 during last year's Mountain Pacific Sports Federation final in a game highlighted by the ejection of three UNM players and two Spartans.

A pair of firsts downed the UNM women's soccer team Wednesday against the San Diego State Aztecs, 2-0. Young talent was prominent on the field Wednesday as the Aztecs' two goals were the first in the collegiate careers of freshmen Lisa Nielsen and Tiphanie Elliott.

Lobo runner wins MWC title

Staff Report Shadrack Biwott and Matt Gonzalez came in first and second, respectively, and helped the 23rd-ranked Lobos to a third-place finish at this weekend's Mountain West Conference Cross Country Championships. With the win, Biwott became the first New Mexico runner to win a conference championship since 1966.

There's no place like home for soccer team

There's just something comforting about coming home after a long road trip. The UNM men's soccer team knows that better than anyone. The Lobos (13-1-1, 7-1-1 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation) took down the Air Force Falcons (6-8-1, 2-6-0 ) 3-0 on Sunday to win the second of two straight home games after a four-game road trip in which they went 2-1-1.

UNM tastes sweet vengeance

The view is a lot clearer from the top. The UNM men's soccer team found that out Thursday night when they took down the Denver Pioneers, 4-1. The win was sweet redemption for UNM. The Pioneers handed the Lobos their first loss of the season, 2-1. With the win, the Lobos improve to 12-1-1 and 6-1-1 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation, good enough to keep first place in the conference.

Rams stand between Lobos and their bowl game hopes

The UNM football team and its Liberty Bowl hopes travel north Saturday to take on the Colorado State Rams. Utah, ranked sixth in the BCS standings, will attend a BCS bowl game if its undefeated record stays intact. If the Lobos win their remaining three games, they will secure second place in the Mountain West Conference.

It's hard to get a reaction from Rocky Long, the Lobos' stone-faced head coach. Ask him about his two stud cornerbacks, though, and his face lights up for just a moment. "They are both good athletes, and they both have good experience," he said. "Being an ex-cornerback myself in the Canadian Football League, I am really critical of that position, and they have both played really well.

Offense in first half brings win

by Daniel S. Archuleta Daily Lobo The Lobos kept their bowl hopes alive with a home win over San Diego State on Saturday night. Despite getting only two points in the second half, the Lobos (4-4, 2-2) held off a late surge by the Aztecs (2-5, 0-3) to come away with a 19-9 win.
