Column: Future unclear after hurricane

by Jenny McKay Daily Lobo guest columnist I graduated from UNM in the spring of 2002 and moved to New Orleans in 2003. I was part of Teach for America, an organization that recruits college graduates to teach for two years in under-resourced areas. I taught 10th-grade English in the Jefferson Parish Public School System and lived in Uptown, a neighborhood in New Orleans near the Tulane and Loyola universities.

Letter: Solution to climate change requires finding our feet

Editor, President Bush aimed for regime change, but he got climate change instead. Iraq's current leaders seem poised to become as autocratic as the tyrant they replaced. It's hard to unscramble an egg. But virtually every scientist whose mind is not for sale to the highest bidder agrees that climate change has now been achieved.

Editorial: Incompetence revealed in Katrina's aftermath

Last Wednesday, I felt horrible for those on the Gulf Coast killed by the water and winds of Hurricane Katrina, but was also hopeful that the worst was over. I didn't realize then I would spend the rest of the week and the weekend and the beginning of the next week watching babies unable to wake up, on the verge of death from dehydration.

Letter: Pets hit by hurricane could use charity too

Editor, While listening to President Bush's speech about Hurricane Katrina, and thinking about how many diapers I could donate with $20, my kitten crawled into my lap and looked up at me with big yellow eyes that said, "Love me!" It reminded me that while there are 1 million homeless people in the Gulf Coast, there are at least that many homeless pets.

Letter: Shuttle drivers deserve credit for improvements

Editor, In response to Christopher Sanchez's article, "UNM Shuttles make improvements," I agree that they are doing a pretty damn good job. However, I think much of the credit should be attributed to the shuttle drivers. While the machines and logistics are necessary, it is the shuttle drivers that make the system work.

Letter: Column delves into facts, avoids easy assumptions

Editor, Dane Roberts raised some pretty important issues in the column "Ruling has curious twist" when he asked "Could it be that the liberal justices voted for New London because they have a general philosophy that gives government a more prominent role in shaping outcomes?"

Letter: Draft of Iraq constitution basic freedoms

Editor, With few exceptions, the news about the current draft of the Iraqi constitution is dominated by stories reporting the rift with Sunni Arabs, the threats to veto the constitution, the worries about excessive federalism, and the strong Islamic tone of certain parts of the constitution.

Column: Cannabis a civil rights issue

by Colin Donoghue Daily Lobo Changing our hemp and marijuana laws is a policy reform usually called for by Independents, Greens and Democrats, but now Republicans are calling for change too. You may recall that former Republican governor of New Mexico, Gary Johnson, was an outspoken opponent of marijuana and hemp prohibition.

Editorial: New Orleans hurricane disaster hits home

Three weeks ago this past Monday, my wife and I had dinner at a nice restaurant on Bourbon Street near Canal Street in New Orleans, which we visited for our honeymoon. This Wednesday, I watched on CNN as the building across the street from that restaurant burned while firefighters scrambled through thigh-high floodwaters, attempting to get water flowing to put the fire out.

Letter: Commuter parking lots stressful, expensive

Editor, After my experience trying to find a parking spot in Q Lot on Tuesday, I find that some of the remarks in that day's Daily Lobo article about the South Lot shuttle situation need to be addressed. Regarding the situation with the South Lot shuttle, I have heard that some of my friends have had trouble with it.

Letter: Conservative Christians dominate nation, UNM

Editor, This letter is in response to the letter by Darren Wood on liberal and conservative views at UNM. Given the conservative trend of both politics and daily interaction in this nation, it would be safe to say that liberal viewpoints are in the minority.

Letter: If relevant, politics should be talked about in class

Editor, When I was at UNM, I opted to major in political science, and while one would expect the department of political science to be a liberal haven, I found most professors - with the exception of one - to be fairly apolitical or not willing to share their political opinions.

Letter: Columnist exaggerates Israel's sacrifice for peace

Editor, In her guest column in Monday's Daily Lobo, Mandi Casey writes of Israel, "No country has ever been expected to give up so much to make peace." For 1,000 years until 1948, this country was Palestine. In the last Camp David negotiations during President Clinton's administration, Israel made its final offer to return to the Palestinians 29 percent of historic Palestine.

Letter: Gaza Strip column ignores history of Israeli violence

Editor, Having read Mandi Casey's column "Withdrawal hurts Israel," I could not believe how misinformed she is about the situation in Israel-Palestine. She writes about how the recent disengagement of Jewish settlers in the Occupied Territory of the Gaza Strip is distressing for those who were forced to leave their homes, schools, businesses, etc.

Letter: Students should question professor bias claims

Editor, Monday's Daily Lobo ran a letter titled "Freshmen face liberal bias in UNM classrooms" by Darren Wood, a UNM alumnus. As Wood would have freshman believe, factions are conspiring right now on what to call conservatives. What will it be this semester, Nazis, racists or bigots? To accuse professors of leveling such slanderous language on students should be taken seriously, unless of course the person being called a Nazi has stated their ideology as "the only good Jew is a dead Jew.

Letter: Professors foster open, respectful environment

Editor, I find it ever so interesting when someone will criticize a group of people for partaking in generalities and political stereotyping by employing those same tactics to make their point. This is a response to the letter featured in Monday's Daily Lobo, in which Darren Wood writes that conservatism is not being accurately represented in classes and that professors at UNM are guilty of interjecting liberal bias into their curriculum.
