UNM gets $2.8M to study diabetes

UNM recently accepted millions of dollars to study diabetes. The National Institutes of Health and the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases awarded a $2.8 million grant to the UNM Health Sciences Center earlier this month.

Editor, 68 years ago this month, the United States atom bombed Hiroshima, Japan. The U.S. atomic bombing of Hiroshima on August 6, 1945 murdered 166,000 people — over 50 times the number of people murdered in New York City and Washington D.C. on 9/11.

The goals of the Muñecas Muertas roller derby team are simple: skate hard, win bouts and beat up girls. Now the team is taking its goals to Iowa for the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association’s (WFTDA) Division II tournament.

Big bites at new cafe

The attempt to revitalize Central Avenue east of Downtown has brought a number of terrific restaurants to the Edo area, and A & B’s Lunchbox is no exception. Owners Alicia and Ben Webb opened the cafe in June, replacing the Daily Grind, just a few doors down from the Artichoke Cafe.

UNM to back small, emergency student loans

A new needs-based microlending program at UNM will allow students to pay back their loans by doing well in school. UNM will collaborate with the New Mexico Educators Federal Credit Union on a program called “Powering Success: Micro Aid for Educational Achievement,”

UNM graduation rates up

UNM awarded more diplomas this year than in each of the past 24 years. According to a document from the office of the provost, the University’s six-year graduation rate, which is at 47.3 percent, is its highest since it first released numbers in 1989.

South campus project inches on

As the fall semester begins, UNM continues to push for more commercial spaces on south campus. At a Board of Directors of Lobo Development meeting held Friday morning, Amy Coburn, director of design and development for the Lobo Development Corporation, said UNM has hired Dekker/Perich/Sabatini, Bohannan Huston, Inc.

The San Diego State University student cheering section known as “The Show” was the focus of a firestorm on Twitter last week after the group’s Twitter account took shots at a UNM freshman basketball player about his emergency appendectomy in Australia.
