The Falcons beat the Lobos 42-24 in UNM's last game of the season, ruining the last game at University Stadium for 21 seniors. The Lobos finished the year 2-3 at home and 4-2 on the road.

Leadership role a good fit

by Kristie Boudwin Daily Lobo Four years ago a coach from Oregon State and an athletic kid from Highland High School joined the UNM men's basketball program. Head coach Ritchie McKay said he watched senior and team captain Mark Walters make tremendous strides since they began their careers at UNM.

Plenty of talent to go around

by Steven Fernandez Daily Lobo To people looking at a roster, Dionne Marsh may be the only name recognizable on the UNM women's basketball team. Any opponents who believe she is the only threat the Lobos are sorely mistaken. While Marsh has earned all the kudos she has been given, UNM is anything but one-dimensional.

A little pain won't stop her

by Steven Fernandez Daily Lobo Senior Abbie Letz's endorsement of the UNM women's basketball program sounds a lot like a movie review. This is a movie she wants people to see. "I've loved it (at UNM)," she said. "I would totally do it again, and I would recommend it to anyone.

"Our expectations are to start off this preseason good, get ready for league and be Mountain West champions again," he said. Chiotti, along with Mark Walters and Tony Danridge, was chosen as a team captain and will share the load in leading the Lobos to another MWC crown.

Three-point shooting brings Bears down

by Steven Fernandez Daily Lobo The women's basketball team used hot three-point shooting to outshine the California Golden Bears 55-46 Sunday night. California's game plan was to shut down Dionne Marsh and the Lobos' post presence, and they did just that in the first half.

A bittersweet end for cross country season

by Steven Fernandez Daily Lobo The UNM women's cross country team ended its season in bittersweet fashion Saturday with its best finish in 17 years at the NCAA Mountain Region Championships. Head coach Matt Henry saw his team likely fall short of an at-large bid to the NCAA Championships, but it was the best finish for the women's team in Henry's tenure.

Lobo defense takes lead against Falcons

by Kevin McFarland Daily Lobo Two exhibition games. Two different stories. The UNM men's basketball team held Division II foe Seattle Pacific University to 30 percent shooting from the floor on Saturday night, but only managed to win 71-53 after putting up 110 points last week against New Mexico Highlands University.

Lobos 2 wins away from clinching conference title

by Riley Bauling Daily Lobo The days of being thrown out of seventh-story windows and landing on its feet are over. The way senior center midfielder Brandon Moss sees it, the UNM men's soccer team dodged its last bullet. "We've had our nine lives already," Moss said, "and we're going on our 10th.

Column: Owens must choose: Lose his voice or his career

by Kristie Boudwin Daily Lobo Congratulations, Terrell Owens. You have become the sixth player in NFL history to catch 100 touchdown passes, yet you are still the biggest dud in the league. It is a shame. If the man came down with a permanent case of laryngitis, he would be quite a star.

Column: The world of football has turned into Twilight Zone

by Daniel S. Archuleta Daily Lobo With the NFL season half over, you've got to wonder, what kind of world do we live in when Cincinnati is 7-2 and in the lead in its division? This is a crazy world we live in - one where a man who has a seven-year, $49 million contract complains that he is not making enough money and then criticizes the people who pay him that money.

Column: Sports team huddles for mid-season review

by Riley Bauling Daily Lobo I've got this Magic 8-Ball. It's not like one of those regular 8-Balls that tells you, "Keep sniffing glue because it ain't coming true" or "Stop sending me queries, your stupidity is just too scary." OK, OK, the old-school Tyco 8-Balls didn't say that, but it would have been a funnier world if they did - with a lot less self-esteem, but hey, you win some, you lose some.

Second-half sweep crushes competition

by Steven Fernandez Daily Lobo Dionne Marsh spent most of her night either on the free-throw line or on the bench in foul trouble. That didn't stop the rest of the women's basketball team from rolling over Metro State Tuesday night, 77-50. Marsh got in foul trouble early and the starter ended up playing only 21 minutes.
